4 Signs of Hearing Loss to Look Out For

1 in every 8 people in the U.S. has some form of hearing loss in both ears. Hearing loss is incredibly common, but many people don’t think about it as long as that hearing loss isn’t disabling. They may not notice some of the early signs of ear damage, so they may not see a doctor in time to start reversing the problem or seeking treatment.

  1. Trouble Hearing in Noisy Places

Often, the first sign that your hearing is going is that you’re unable to hear in noisy environments. You may hear just fine in “normal” situations, but as soon as there are too many competing noises, you can no longer hear the little things.

Try having a conversation with a friend in a crowded bar or restaurant. Are you able to reasonably hear them, or do you find yourself trying to read their lips?

Struggling to hear somewhat in a noisy environment is normal, but if you find that your ability to hear in noisy places has recently gotten worse, it may be one of the early signs of hearing damage.

  1. Listening Fatigue

Did you know that straining to listen can actually tire you out? It’s called listening fatigue, and it’s common in people who are starting to lose their hearing.

You may still be able to hear, but it’s taking more effort for you to process conversations. This isn’t a cognitive problem. It’s because your ears aren’t taking in as much information.

At the end of a long day of talking and listening, you may feel more tired than normal. While this could be the result of general social fatigue, you may want to consider that your hearing could be the culprit.

  1. Difficulty Following Conversations

When you’re talking to your friends or coworkers, do you find yourself asking them to repeat themselves more often? If more than one person is talking at a time, do you lose focus?

This may be a sign that you’re starting to lose your hearing. As long as someone is right in front of you, you should be able to follow a straightforward conversation with them, even if there is a competing voice nearby.

If you’ve said “What?” one too many times during a conversation, it may be time to get your hearing checked and invest in a pair of nano rechargeable hearing aids.

  1. No Longer Noticing Everyday Sounds

This one is subtle, but once you notice it, you won’t be able to un-notice it.

Take a moment and listen closely for those ambient noises. If you don’t hear them, it’s a sign that you’re starting to lose your hearing.
